Minister: BMW plans significant investment in Mexico

According to Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, German automaker BMW is preparing a sizable new investment in the state of San Luis Potosi in central Mexico, where the business already has a plant. A day before, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Ebrard had announced that BMW will invest about 800 million euros ($866.64 million) in San Luis Potosi, without mentioning if this would be a new investment in Mexico.

After a diplomatic function, Ebrard told reporters, “The president has requested us to speed up investments in our country.” BMW will make a significant investment in San Luis Potosi, as he has already stated.

The foreign minister made no mention of the purpose of the investment.

The $1 billion San Luis Potosi facility was inaugurated in 2019 by BMW, which has three facilities in Latin America. The 3 Series, 2 Series Coupe, and M2 models are now made there.

According to Ebrard, Lopez Obrador had a conversation about the investment with his German counterpart and the German car industry. In September, Mexican President Frank-Walter Steinmeier paid a visit to Germany.In February, Lopez Obrador and Ebrard will visit San Luis Potosi, he announced on Thursday.
